mayer wasn't/isn't claiming this as his own song. he was just paying homage to a great musician. he covers songs of artists he is influenced/inspired by. he's done covers from ray charles, to jimi hendrix. he's not comparing himself to them, he's simply toasting his glass to them. i mean if that's so hard for tom petty fans to wrap their brains around. i don't know..
