Actually the song has been dated back 200 years, first recorded by Leadbelly and others in the 1920s. Obviously, its an American folk song, which many, many people have covered, including the Animals, Dylan, Joan Baez, Leadbelly, Muse, etc. Its actually the most covered song of all time :)

No it's not fuckin' real, the song is an old balled from the late 1800's. It spoke of a whore house in general, one in particular the people called the house of the rising sun and from what i hear from my grandparents(I've lived in Louisiana my whole life) the people called it that because in the morning was when all the drunks left and lots of prostitutes were always found dead. The song doesn't pertain to a particular person because balleds change, and so people change the words in them.
