The rats weren't acctually a part of the origional legend. They were added in by Robert Browning in 1842.
It's a matter of historical fact that hamelin lost its children, its just that HOW they lost them that has become the legend.
In the year of 1284, on the day of Saints John and Paul/on 26 June/130 children born in Hamelin were seduced/By a piper, dressed in all kinds of colours/and lost at the place of execution near the koppen.
Thats the oldest surving account of the incident.
