Well, if you call the sport "football" you are actually incorrect because the real name of the sport is "Association Football." The word "soccer" is derived from the word "Association." The word "soccer" was invented by the British and first used by them as a nickname for the sport of "Assocation Football." Therefore, referring to the sport as "soccer" is correct. Is this explanation good enough?
